Fascinating Facts About The Fullerton Hotel
When selecting a hotel for a trip to Singapore, there are many factors to consider. Where is the hotel located? How much does it cost? What kind of service and amenities does it offer? These are just some of the questions travellers ask as they compare the various attributes of each hotel in order to make the best choice. In a destination as historically fascinating as Singapore, many visitors also look for the ‘culture factor’ in their hotel. They want a hotel that sits outside the cookie cutter mould of chain brand run-of-the-mill hotels. They want a hotel with a story, with history, with cultural significance. As it happens, this is something The Fullerton Hotel has in spades.
Looking To The Past
A truly iconic setting within Singapore, the site on which The Fullerton Hotel now stands has seen plenty of action over the years. It all started as modern Singapore found its feet, when Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles negotiated a treaty that allowed Britain to create a trading port on the island in 1819.
From there, British customs and culture found their way into almost every aspect of Singaporean life, leaving the colonial mark on everything from the architecture to afternoon tea. And The Fullerton? In 1825, an imposing fort was built on the Fullerton site, named after Robert Fullerton, the first governor of the Straits Settlements.
Some fifty years later, the fort was demolished, to later make way for the Fullerton building we know today, to be built in 1928. Home to the General Post Office, the Exchange, the Chamber of Commerce and The Singapore Club, the building quickly became the epicentre of Singapore’s official, commercial and social life.
